SOFTBALL DISTRICT ROUNDUP: Top-ranked Mercy coasts into D1 regionals (2024)

The No. 1 team in Division 1, Farmington Hills Mercy, advanced with ease from the past weekend’s district tournament hosted by the Marlins.

Kaitlyn Pallozzi hit one of five home runs, and she threw a four-hit complete game with 15 strikeouts in a 12-2 victory Saturday over Livonia Stevenson that crowned the Marlins district champs. The ace drove in a team-high four RBIs in the process out of the cleanup spot.

Carmella Crane, Meghan Kowalyk, Sophia Paluk and Evelyn Miller all joined Pallozzi in going yard in that win.

Every out recorded by Pallozzi was a strikeout in Mercy’s three-inning 15-0 victory against Southfield A&T in the semifinal. The Marlins drew 15 walks, and Miller doubled, driving in two runs to advance in the bracket.

Alli Nowak and Kylie Greene had the lone hits for Farmington in a 10-0 loss to the Spartans in the other district semifinal.

Mercy next takes on Warren Mott in Saturday’s regional semifinals at Livonia Franklin.

D1, District 4 (at Lapeer)

The Lightning got the better of Oxford, 11-6, in the district final despite Lapeer’s slim 11-10 edge in the hits column.

Both Karsyn Malinich and Bella Hurst homered to provide a spark for the Wildcats, but five runs in the bottom of the sixth were countered by a seven-run seventh inning by the Lightning, which proved too much to overcome.

Makayla Ganz, Maddie VonKnorring and Laura Morgan joined Malinich in finishing with two hits in the defeat for Oxford.

The Wildcats reached the final thanks to a 9-5 victory over Davison. Morgan and VonKnorring both had two hits in that win, as did Elliot Smith, Madilynn Heller and Isabella Makarewicz.

D1, District 16 (at Walled Lake Western)

In a battle of arms, South Lyon defeated rival South Lyon East 1-0 for the district championship in eight innings.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Izzy Nooe hit a pop single that dropped into the shallow outfield, scoring Izabella DeGroat with the game-winning run.

That was Nooe’s second hit of the game, while DeGroat finished 3-for-3 at the plate in the Lions’ triumph. Ava Bradshaw allowed just one hit to East’s Olivia McPherson in the win, striking out 18 batters. Her counterpart, Kaitlyn Solberg, fanned a dozen in the defeat.

Walled Lake Western fell to East in the semifinal, 9-1. Paulina Ankawi struck out nine while going the distance on the hill for the Cougars, and Anna Lassan homered while finishing with three RBIs. Maddy Rehn and Sierra Geisler each collected two hits for the Warriors.

Bradshaw gave up one hit and racked up 15 Ks in the Lions’ 3-0 victory over Novi in the semis. Emma Prahin was charged with only one earned run and fanned 11 with no walks for the Wildcats.

D1, District 23 (at Warren Mott)

Makyala Williams had the lone hit for Ferndale in an 18-0 semifinal defeat to Warren Mott that lasted just three innings.

Renaissance defeated Oak Park 7-0 in the opposite semifinal matchup.

D1, District 25 (at Lakeland)

Lakeland had to score runs late to hold off a rally by Milford, eventually taking the district title with a 10-7 victory.

Brynn Talierico had four hits in as many at-bats for the Eagles, Parker Ostach drove in three runs. Along with Ostach, Nathalie Hagle and Zoie Gagnon also had a pair of hits for Lakeland.

Lauren Elkins had a grand slam in the sixth inning for the Mavericks that made it a one-run contest. Marisa Merz also had a home run for Milford in the loss.

Multi-hit performances by Lauren Fox, Kayla Turmell and Makenna Kresbaugh were not enough for Walled Lake Northern in a 6-3 defeat to Lakeland in the semifinals. Hagle and Maddie Borders homered, with Borders finishing 3-for-3 in that win.

In a high-scoring opposite semifinal, the Mavericks defeated Walled Lake Central to advance, 15-9. Milford’s Samantha Laughrey shined at the plate, finishing 4-for-6 with five RBIs. She homered, as did teammates Elkins, Merz and Hana Scripture. Grace Matheson, Jessica Fick and Bella Spellman all drove in two runs each in the loss for the Vikings.

D1, District 26 (at Waterford Kettering)

In a pitching duel, Bloomfield Hills bested Clarkston 2-0 in the championship game as Grace Main conceded just four hits and one walk in the shutout effort.

Sloane Freed and Sienna La Sala drove in the runs for the Black Hawks in the win. NaKenna Knowlton surrendered just the two runs on four hits over six innings of work for the Wolves.

Anna Carlson had a team-high four RBIs for the Black Hawks in a 15-0 win over Kettering in the semifinals. Main, Evie Chin and Avery Howland each pitched a scoreless inning for Bloomfield Hills in the victory.

Knowlton finished with two hits and had three RBIs in Clarkston’s 11-0 semifinal victory over West Bloomfield Hills. She threw three innings, striking out eight, and Cara Parker provided two innings of scoreless relief of Knowlton. Charlie Bower, Sydney Crawford and Morgan Christian had the hits for the Lakers.

D1, District 27 (at Birmingham Seaholm)

Corina Carrillo’s double with two outs in the bottom of the eighth gave North Farmington a 4-3 walk-off win over Seaholm for the district championship.

An RBI double by Mary Gumbis put the Maples ahead 3-2 in the top of the seventh — Seaholm scored two runs in the sixth as well — then Lauren Ramold’s sacrifice fly scored Carrillo in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extras.

Sophia Wanecek had two hits and RBIs each in the title game for the Maples, who stormed past Berkley 19-3 in the semis. Reagan Johnson went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and Gigi Hill finished 4-for-4 while driving in three runs in that win for Seaholm. Kayla Childress hit a solo shot for the Bears in the defeat.

The Raiders defeated Groves 7-4 in the semifinals as Ramold drove in a team-high three runs. Carrillo scored three times and Lindsey Dorfman went 3-for-5 with two RBIs as well for North Farmington. Aiden Lockwood had a team-high three hits and Jacey Roy drove in two runs for the Falcons in the loss.

D1, District 29 (at Stoney Creek)

Two runs in each of the first two innings gave Stoney Creek a lead, but it was not enough, as Lake Orion rallied to win, 5-4, and claim the district title.

Kate Stephens and Danielle Bryant both had two hits, and Erin Flynn and Christa Munn followed them in the order with two RBIs each for Stoney. Rylee Limberger, who allowed two earned runs and struck out eight on the hill for the Dragons, also walked twice and had a solo shot at the plate. Gracy Luby also went yard without runners on base for Lake Orion.

Only Natalie Lacrosse and Taylor Parsons had hits for Rochester in its 11-0 defeat to Lake Orion in the semis. Jada Lopez struck out 10 for Lake Orion, and Britt drove in a team-high four runs. Luby and Bell combined for five RBIs as well for the Dragons in that win.

Lilley Lutzka had the only hit for Rochester Adams off Flynn (13 strikeouts) in the Cougars’ 6-1 semifinal win. Flynn and Munn both had three hits and Stephens, like Munn, drove in a pair of runs in the win.

D2,District 57 (at Detroit Country Day)

An error in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Evie Greenwald to help Detroit Country Day defeat Pontiac Notre Dame Prep 4-3 for the district title.

Joey Imsland’s solo shot in the sixth inning tied the game to help send it to extras for the Yellowjackets. Juliette Hauser pitched the complete game for DCD, as did Anastacia Wachowiak (4 H, 0 BBs, 9 Ks) for the Fighting Irish. Wachowiak also led NDP at the plate with three hits.

Hauser also had to pitch eight innings, allowing only two hits and fanning 16 in an eight-inning victory over Marian in the semifinals. Hauser also drove in the winning run. Georgia Zilka struck out seven in the Mustangs’ defeat.

Katie Healy had two hits to match as many RBIs in a 4-2 victory over Orchard Lake St. Mary’s to reach the final. Lily McCaffrey and Mia Tribul both had a pair of hits for the Eaglets in the defeat.

D2, District 58 (at Hazel Park)

Hazel Park’s season came to an end with a 15-5 defeat to Madison Heights Lamphere in the district semis.

Madison Platt and Dayana Reed had the lone hits for the Vikings in the loss.

D2, District 63 (at Lake Fenton)

Ortonville Brandon fell to Goodrich 15-0 in four innings in the semifinals. The Blackhawks were unable to scratch a hit off the eventual district champs in the defeat.

D3, District 87 (at Clawson)

Jillian Wulff and Addison Tikey had the hits for Clawson in a 13-2 defeat to Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett in the final.

Tikey finished with a team-high three hits, while Cassidy Perry and Meghan Shea both had a pair in the Trojans’ 9-2 win against Auburn Hills Oakland Christian to reach the title game.

D4, District 124 (at Sterling Heights Parkway Christian)

Royal Oak Shrine totaled 20 hits to defeat Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest 11-8 in the district championship game.

Maris Graveline led the way with four hits, followed by three from Julia Denhof. Madeleine Doud was one of five Knights with two hits, and she ended with a team-high three RBIs for Shrine. Alyssa Parets, Kamryn Kasak and Grace Schroeder all had two hits for Lutheran Northwest in the defeat.

Ashley Cadicamo had five RBIs on two hits for the Crusaders in an 11-4 win over Plymouth Christian to reach the finals. Kasak finished 3-for-4, while Lily Jablonowski and Aida Deschner both collected multiple hits as well.

Shrine beat Madison Heights Madison 20-5 in its semifinal.
